Human behavioral mistakes and insufficient training indirectly promote cybercrime. Solutions have been proposed to overcome cybersecurity gaps through extreme gamification and subjective habit formation. The purpose of this research is to investigate and report on the effects on the general populace and the human element of cybersecurity. Resolution of these issues and progression through effective cybersecurity games and habit-building might lead towards a cyber-safe world.

Research Question

Qualitative study regarding cybersecurity awareness in high school students:

• Are high school students conscious of cybercrime?
• How unsafe is it for the students to have devices logged in?
• What makes them log off and switch off devices after every use?
• Would they want cybersecurity practice sessions at school?
• Control question: non-cyber security action like locking the vehicle once parked in a car lot.

Methods, Procedures, and Techniques

1. a) Methods: Closed and open-ended questionnaire survey of cybersecurity knowledge, perils of devices logged in, and feelings toward cybersecurity measures through e-survey. Ethical clearance and administrative approval from schools are necessary.
2. b) Data Collection: Informed consent data will be obtained and analyzed utilizing inductive theme analysis.
3. c) Choice of Methodology: Online surveys are rapid, easy, inexpensive, and enable large sample sizes.
4. d) Benefits: Subjective data is given by open-ended questions, and the survey is short and comprehensible.
5. e) Drawbacks: Lack of ability to conduct interviews, ensure participant authenticity, dependency on email responses, and possible inability to measure subjective responses of high school students accurately.

Sample

1. a) Population of Interest: High school students.
2. b) Sample Participants: 2384 Grade 9 to 12 students at Westview High School.
3. c) The sample depicts high school students across gender, race, ethnicity, or religion and includes people who are English literate.

Procedures

1. a) Participant Recruitment: Online email invitations through the school administration.
2. b) Study Procedures: Participants will receive an email notification of a link to a survey, followed by informed consent. The survey will be administered on the internet on school equipment.

This research will aid in the knowledge of awareness and behavior of high school students toward cybersecurity. It will assist in developing effective cybersecurity training programs for teenagers, focusing on the demand for cybersecurity education in schools.
