School is a defining experience for everyone, with the standard format in the United States including a principal managing classrooms, teachers teaching, administrators enforcing rules, coaches providing advice, and students interacting with peers and teachers. Every locality has its own school district, structured by grade levels: elementary (Kindergarten to 5th grade), middle school (5th to 8th grade), and high school (9th to 12th grade). After high school, students may have the opportunity to go for higher education. The school environment plays a critical role in students’ emotional and psychological development, thus the significance of creating a positive, supportive, and enriching environment.
Positive Psychology’s twin founders, Martin Seligman and Mikhaly Csikszentmihalyi, in 1998, focused on improving human life satisfaction and fulfillment through cultivating strengths and virtues rather than specifically curing mental health issues. Seligman’s PERMA model outlines essential elements for happiness and well-being: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement. Establishing a positive school climate is most important for students to thrive, with positive emotions being fostered, active engagement, significant relationships, and a sense of achievement.
School positive psychology programs give students the power to understand and develop their character strengths, thus adding to increased well-being. However, there are weaknesses in that some of the students can get negative consequences if they are forced to find and develop their character strengths, including aggression, depression, or anxiety. Also, personal strengths can be open to different meanings by other people, thus causing potential misinterpretation.
The increasing focus on youth development has led to an emerging body of evidence emphasizing the importance of well-being in children and adolescents. School-based positive psychology initiatives are on the rise as educators and professionals acknowledge the need to integrate them into educational curricula. While there is hope that such interventions are effective, challenges related to resources, integration into the curriculum, access to information, teacher preparedness, and quality training require focus for effective implementation.
Studies always reiterate the positive effects of blending positive psychology values and virtues into learning spaces. The implementation of these principles in teaching not only serves the needs of instructors and administrators but also has a tremendous impact on the lives of learners. Positive psychology, being the focus on setting goals, encouraging positive feelings, active engagement, building connections, and building achievement, not only influences current experience but also prepares the groundwork for future undertakings in career, schooling, and human interactions.
