Activity Summary

The present assessment included the filling out of two questionnaires designed to evaluate individual traits. The first one was on character strengths, as the ability for optimal functioning towards desired outcomes (Lopez et al., 2018). The main strength found was fairness, measured through the quantitative personality test on the VIA website, which is to treat all individuals equally without biases, avoiding prejudiced decision-making, and giving equal opportunities to all. While fairness being identified as the main strength was not anticipated, it highlighted something not typically related to the individual.

The Compassionate Love Scale, the second questionnaire, produced less unexpected results. The score, which was in the middle of the scale, reflected the existence of compassion without an extreme tendency to sacrifice personal goals and needs to help others. As a registered nurse in the ICU, the subject reported compassion both on and off the job but stressed the need not to sacrifice personal happiness and goals to meet the needs and goals of others.

Relationship to Positive Psychology

Secondary activity focused on the Compassionate Love Scale where compassionate love has been defined as awareness and sensitivity to others’ suffering, plus the intention of relieving others’ suffering (Chiesi et al., 2020). It entails feelings, cognition, and conduct in terms of care, compassion, and offering support to other people. Compassionate Love Scale has 21 items that consist of responding with understanding and will to assist a person’s suffering. Research on the Compassionate Love Scale has established high internal consistency and strong correlations validating it, especially with empathy, helpfulness, volunteerism, self-esteem, and positive mood (Chiesi et al., 2020).

Application to Personal or Professional Issues

In utilizing the VIA categorization system, which listed fairness as the strength, the person, being a nurse, considered how difficult it was to offer equal treatment to all patients, even those with difficult histories. Even with difficult circumstances, fairness never took a back seat.

In the case of the Compassionate Love Scale, the person recognized a balanced rating, reflecting a compassionate disposition both in a personal and professional capacity. Nevertheless, a sharp line was identified, indicating the importance of maintaining healthy boundaries to avoid burnout in helping strangers at the detriment of one’s own well-being. Professional organizations in healthcare, education, and the legal system highlight the significance of compassion tied to pro-social behavior and social action (Chiesi et al., 2020).
