Psychology is divided into schools of thought that offer information about human intelligence, behavior, culture, and social relations. Feminist psychology is among the significant schools of thought in contemporary psychology that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s as part of the general feminist movement. The following paper gives an overview of the history of development and impact of feminist psychology.
Feminist psychology was a movement built by prominent leaders such as Jean Baker Miller, Nancy Chodorow, Carol Gilligan, Sandra Bem, and Mary Belenky. They were involved in the activities aimed at bringing an end to the oppression and marginalization of women in psychology and all of society (Wypych, 2022).
Among some of the most important milestones in feminist psychology are the publication of Betty Friedan’s “The Feminine Mystique” in 1963, which mobilized the feminist movement in the United States. Subsequently, there was the formation of the Association for Women in Psychology (AWP) in 1973, which provided a platform for feminist psychologists to collaborate and advance their research (Borzouei & Motesaddei, 2021).
Central feminist psychology concepts oppose gender as a biological construct, emphasizing instead its social construction as a norm. Feminist psychologists argue that dominant psychological theories do not take women’s lives into consideration or underestimate them and, consequently, support gender-biased therapeutic approaches and research designs. They advocate for the extensive definition of gender and emphasize addressing prejudice and oppression in constructing psychological well-being (Borzouei & Motesaddei, 2021).
The feminist psychologists developed new theories and approaches to bring about a further understanding of experiences of women and oppressed groups. Some of the new theories include relational-cultural therapy, which discusses the significance of relationships in achieving mental health, and new ways of examining gender and power within interpersonal relationships (Borzouei & Motesharrei, 2021).
Feminist psychology emergence was influenced by historical factors such as second-wave feminism and the women’s rights movement. These two movements gave women an arena where they could articulate their experience and overturn society’s norm, thus the structuring of feminist psychology emergence (DeBlaare et al., 2019).
The social and cultural change of the 1960s and 1970s, including the counterculture movement, also helped shape feminist psychology. The change facilitated that feminist psychologists dispute conventional psychological models and sermon less discriminatory and exclusive practices (Medina et al., 2020).
Feminist psychology opposes stereotypical gender roles and promotes critical reflection on how these constructs influence people’s lives. By emphasizing intersectionality—how various forms of oppression intersect—feminist psychology expands knowledge of social inequalities and their impact on psychological well-being (McCormick-Huhn et al., 2019).
Secondly, feminist psychology advocates for social and ethical action to rectify systemic injustices and promote gender equality. By challenging outdated ideologies and promoting inclusive practices, feminist psychology contributes to the creation of a more equitable and just society (Churchwell et al., 2020).
Lastly, feminist psychology has been a necessary paradigm for explaining and striving to mitigate gender oppression and inequality. Through its emphasis on social justice, inclusivity, and moral action, feminist psychology remains at the forefront of social thought and ushering in positive change within both psychological science and society.
