Psychological theories and strategies have contributed significantly to professional practice in healthcare, education, and business (Adams et al., 2019). It is crucial that practitioners know the effect of prominent schools of psychological thought on professional behavior in order to offer effective and evidence-informed services. The influence of cognitive psychology, a prominent school of psychological thought, on nursing professional behavior is explored in this report. It examines the landmark events that characterize cognitive psychology, how it interacts with other schools of thought, and the cultural factors that influence its evolution. Furthermore, it outlines how knowledge from cognitive psychology informs professional practice in nursing with tangible applications.
This was the time of a pivotal shift in psychology from behaviorism to cognitive psychology with the formation of new approaches to the study of mental processes (Mandal, 2021). The Cognitive Revolution set the stage for cognitive psychology as a distinct school of thought with the emphasis on the need to study mental processes in the study of human behavior.
Suggesting a computer analogy for the human mind, this theory pictured mental processes such as perception and memory as forms of information processing (Sayood, 2018). It provided a means of investigating mental processes and their impact on behavior.
Combining cognitive psychology and behaviorism, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) aims to modify maladaptive actions and thoughts in order to enhance mental health (American Psychological Association, 2017). Widespread use to treat numerous various mental diseases, CBT has had a significant impact on psychology.
Technological advances, such as the development of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), have made it possible to study the functioning of the brain in cognitive processes, enabling better understanding of cognitive psychology (Loued-Khenissi et al., 2018).
Preceding the coming of cognitive psychology, behaviorism prioritized observable behavior over mental processes (Bordens & Horowitz, 2018). Although it influenced early cognitive psychology, it ultimately contributed to its coming of age by delineating its defects.
Emphasizing perception and binding of sensory input, Gestalt psychology influenced cognitive psychology by focusing on the research of mental activities such as perception and attention (Çeliköz et al., 2019).
Focusing on subjective experience and personal change, humanistic psychology has indirectly impacted cognitive psychology by informing counseling and psychotherapy methodologies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (Seligman, 2019).
Focusing on the impact of evolutionary processes on behavior and mental processes, evolutionary psychology informs cognitive psychology and social cognition (Badcock et al., 2019).
Western cognitive psychology draws upon cultural norms of individualism and rationality (Scott, 2020). While beneficial, it has been criticized on the grounds of potentially overlooking the impact of social and cultural influences on human conduct.
Eastern practices like mindfulness meditation have been employed to shape cognitive-behavioral therapy, in addition to conforming to theory in cognitive psychology (Hazlett-Stevens et al., 2018).
Recognizing human experience diversity, multiculturalism emphasizes the importance of considering culture when attempting to understand cognition and providing culturally responsive care (Adams et al., 2019).
Understanding cognitive processes enables nurses to recognize cognitive biases and pursue objectivity when providing patient care (Narayan, 2019). Furthermore, cognitive-behavioral interventions grounded in cognitive psychology principles assist in managing mental health diseases (Youn & Marques, 2021).
The integration of cultural factors in patient treatment assures culturally responsive practices, given the influence of beliefs about culture on cognition (Adams et al., 2019).
The application of cognitive psychology to health education optimizes the effectiveness of interventions by addressing individual needs and learning styles (Schmidt & Mamede, 2020).
Awareness of influential schools of thought within psychology, and specifically cognitive psychology, informs professional practice in most areas. Cognitive functions, together with cultural issues, and cognitive-behavioral interventions contribute to better patient results and more customized care. Appreciation of psychological knowledge supports higher-quality professional practice and provides service of the best quality.
