Gentrification, or the influx of wealthier individuals into poor or city neighborhoods, brings with it the issue of whether it perpetuates segregation. Despite claims by proponents of creating economically sound and diverse communities, research mostly suggests otherwise. While there is some integration at first, gentrification ultimately creates racial and economic segregation.
Racial segregation typically follows gentrification. The East Village is a poignant example, as Latinos that formerly made up 68 percent of the community now make up less than 25 percent. Adler (2015) explains how gentrification begins the process of integration but leads to predominantly white communities, as seen in Manhattan. The process begins with the movement of unusual businesses, drawing higher-income citizens to previously unfavorable areas. Sadly, this leads to the displacement or grouping of minorities, entrenching racial segregation.
Gentrification, as a means of bridging economic disparities, ironically expands them. Initially, it makes previously inaccessible markets accessible to low-income groups. But rising prices create more displacement, expanding economic disparities. Families that were meant to benefit from economic integration find themselves marginalized or displaced, making the initial promise to bridge economic disparities meaningless.
In spite of gentrification assertions of integration, gentrification reorganizes segregation rather than creating economic and racial divisions. Tobar highlights the disconnect between integration and diversity, where economic diversity is not translated into integrated communities. Business influx does not benefit primarily indigenous residents but still maintains segregation rather than integration.
Initially conceived as a cure for segregation, gentrification does not succeed, as it tends to displace original populations and substitute them with white populations. Exceptions aside, the overall trend suggests gentrification’s inability to fulfill its promise of integration.
In short, gentrification, intended to enhance diversity and integration, paradoxically expands segregation on racial and economic grounds. Despite exceptions, the overall tendency indicates the failure of gentrification to end underlying disparities.
