Career Planning 

Career Goal:

My career goal is to attain a position as a school psychologist in a school district with a demonstrated need for mental health services. I firmly believe that my higher education and background in this field would enable me to help the academic and emotional health of children and their families effectively, and I am committed to making a difference in the education sector through this profession.

Job Market:

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the education industry, with potential increased demand for school psychologists to assist in managing distance learning difficulties and student and employee mental health. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) suggests a shortage of School Psychologists in the majority of regions across the country, expected to persist due to retirements and increased student enrollment. Also, there might be a stronger need for School Psychologists to work with disabled children or dealing with social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties (National Association of School Psychologists, 2020).

Education Plan:

I plan to pursue a graduate degree in school psychology from Capella University to complete my career goal to become a school psychologist. When I finish my degree, I can become licensed in my state, which typically includes passing a licensing exam and accruing supervised experience. I will make sure to thoroughly check the specific requirements for licensure in my state and fulfill all of the requirements to be a licensed School Psychologist.

Skills Plan:

To acquire the necessary skills for a career in school psychology, I plan to obtain a graduate degree in the discipline and intern or participate in practicums to develop working experience. I will also acquire a collection of soft skills, such as communication, empathy, and problem-solving, through participation in student organizations, volunteer activities, and leadership roles. By blending academic coursework with experiential education and learning essential skills, I believe I will be well-qualified to excel as a school psychologist.

Experience Plan:

I will gain the experience required to fulfill my career goal of a school psychologist by completing an internship or practicum in addition to my graduate program. This will give me the chance to apply what I know and can do in a real setting, with advice from experienced professionals. Apart from the practicum or internship, I will also seek other avenues where I can gain experience, such as volunteering at school or conducting research projects in my area of study. By combining these experiential learning experiences with my course work and the acquisition of essential skills, I will be optimally prepared for a productive career as a school psychologist.

Course Plan:

• Foundations of School Psychology Practice: Students will give an extensive foundation in the principles and practices of school psychology.

• Advanced Assessment and Counseling for School Psychologists: Provides skills necessary to assess and counsel children within a school context.

• Response to Intervention and Functional Behavior Assessment and Analysis: Prepares to implement interventions and assess student behavior to support learning and development.

• Multicultural Perspectives on Human Behavior: Broadens awareness of the influence of culture and diversity on human nature.

• Childhood Mental Health, Counseling, and Crisis Intervention/Prevention: Prepares to support children’s and adolescents’ mental health and well-being in the school environment, including crisis intervention.

• Psychological Evaluations for School Psychologists 1 and 2: Prepares to administer and interpret psychological tests in a school environment.

• Biological Basis of Behavior: Enhances knowledge of the biological and neurological basis of behavior.

• Principles of School Psychology: Provides thorough introduction to school psychology and duties and responsibilities.

• Cognitive/Affective Psychology: Helps to further an understanding of cognitive and affective processes.

To attain my career goal of becoming a school psychologist, I will utilize a range of resources such as the Master’s in School Psychology program at Capella University, professional organizations such as the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the American Psychological Association (APA), experiential training such as internships or supervised hours in a school setting, and electronic resources such as professional blogs, webinars, and online courses. These resources will provide me with the full education, professional networking, hands-on training, and exposure to the latest developments in the field.
