Personality traits define the common patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving (Soto, 2015). They are an integral component of human psychopathology and functioning (Baranczuk, 2019). Soto (2015) suggests that there are two principles to grasp personality traits: cumulative and maturity principles. The cumulative principle asserts that traits become stable with time, listed from highest to lowest trait. Meanwhile, the law of maturity indicates that the mean level of traits, as individuals become more agreeable, conscientious, and emotionally stable with age (Soto, 2015).
Eysenck’s Hierarchical model identifies three broad traits: Psychoticism, Extroversion, and Neuroticism, which can be inherited or acquired by repeated habitual actions several times (Larsen & Buss, 2018). Personality in adulthood is a combination of hierarchical and Big Five factors, but adolescence and youth are characterized by Little Six factors and four broad trait dimensions: sociability, negative emotionality, persistence, and activity level (Soto, 2015).
Personality information may be obtained from four primary sources, including self-report, observer report, laboratory tests, and life history consequences (Larsen & Buss, 2018). Various tests have been utilized to assess personality, including Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, Birkman Method, and Hogan Personality Inventory. While administering the tests, there must be an investigation into validity and reliability. Validity refers to the extent to which a measure captures what it claims to capture, and reliability refers to the extent to which there is consistency in the measure obtained (Larsen & Buss, 2018).
I gave both the SAPA-Project test and the IPIP-NEO test as per the five-factor model in this research to establish their validity and reliability. Despite results from analogous test-taking experiences, though, consistency in both tests was discovered. I exhibited low extraversion, which depicts introverted, average agreeableness, low conscientiousness in the sense of liking to live in the moment and being careless, high neuroticism describing sensitivity and mood swings, and low openness depicting conservative thinking.
Upon reviewing the results, I found both tests to be accurate reflections of my personality. However, I believe the SAPA-Project test demonstrated reliability, while the IPIP-NEO test showed validity. Considering Eysenck’s proposition that repeated actions can become habitual (Larsen & Buss, 2018), I am motivated to address my low conscientiousness. Although my personality may evolve over time, significant changes are unlikely.
