Finding a romantic partner can prove difficult for both, as does finding sexual satisfaction in a relationship. It may include numerous measures to have a healthy sexual relationship. Evolutionary Psychology says men and women may use different means to save and foster relationships that cause conflicts between genders due to gender differences. Patricia and Ira’s case study is one such example.
Evolutionary Psychology, the scientific study of human thoughts and behaviors within the context of evolutionary aims such as reproduction, highlights the disparity in the way men and women choose mates. Men, being biologically inclined to find sexually attractive mates, emphasize short-term mating strategies, whereas women, being able to become pregnant and give birth, look for mates who will offer support for themselves and their children. Such gender differences define the process of choosing mates, with varying life goals (Kelly, 2014).
Studies have shown that men and women use different strategies to achieve their relationship objectives. These strategies are classified as long-term, centered on marriage and childbearing, and short-term, centered on genetic compatibility. Both sexes may use both strategies, but men tend to use short-term mating more, while women use long-term investment because of the differences in reproductive costs and benefits (Sefcek et al., 2007).
Research has indicated that women using short-term mating tactics still manage to choose partners and reproduce, particularly under adverse conditions such as disease or war. In contrast, men using long-term tactics manage to acquire better quality mates, which improves the fitness of their offspring overall (Kruger, Fisher, & Jobling, 2003).
An evolutionary psychology approach in examining the case study of Patricia and Ira sheds light on their relationship dynamics. Patricia’s interest in living together implies a shift toward a long-term relationship from the short-term state, with priority on commitment and shared costs. Ira’s hesitation, in contrast, represents a liking of the status quo, implying misalignment of future goals. The difference may provoke Patricia to reassess whether or not Ira is a fitting long-term relationship partner, likely terminating the partnership or embracing the short-term partnership (Sefcek et al., 2007).
In response to the ethical issues in offering couple relationship therapy to individuals such as Patricia and Ira, it is advisable to follow confidentiality standards as set by the APA. Therapists have to set clear boundaries in handling client confidentiality, particularly when treating couples. All confidentiality agreements need to be held unless both partners agree to exchange information to ensure fair treatment and building trust in the therapeutic relationship (Pukay-Martin, 2008).
Knowledge of the evolutionary basis of mate choice and relationship dynamics can aid couples in managing conflict and consolidating their relationship. An awareness of gender-based differences and ethical considerations is important for therapists who work with couples to resolve conflict and develop healthier relationships.
