PSY FPX 8841 Assessment 5:Reflection on Professional Development

As a sport psychology master’s graduate student, I am looking forward to taking an internship with a mentor employed by your distinguished organization. I now observe that my interest and competence level suit best with Career Track 3, which entails clinical/counseling services to various client populations, such as athletes (Capella University, n.d.). This profession usually requires a doctoral degree from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited clinical/counseling psychology program, with top-level coursework in sport psychology and related disciplines. Nonetheless, drawing from my master’s experience, I foresee earning certification as a mental performance consultant through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology and working as a psychological consultant with a sports medicine clinic.

My preparation for this line of work entails several things, and my present occupation is an important part. I am now a flight attendant with a major US airline, and I have flown on charter flights for an NFC East team during the NFL season. I intend to take this opportunity to apply mentorship within the player development program, thereby acquiring insight on the application of sport psychology in a professional sports setting. The player development program, as carried out by organizations like the Washington Redskins, provides for continuous personal and professional growth among players, with emphasis on lifelong learning as well as well-rounded growth (Washington Redskins, 2018).

Continuing education is of utmost importance in the dynamically changing area of sport psychology. Though not yet certified or licensed, I am cognizant of the ethical mandates that form the foundation of my professional development. The Association for Applied Sport Psychology code of ethics, in turn, the Boundaries of Competence, reaffirms the importance of acknowledging one’s own limits and seeking counsel as appropriate (Whelan, 2011). In addition, compliance with ethical standards outlined in the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct, specifically confidentiality (APA, 2017), is at the top of my ethics.

Upon reflection of my recent experience in Performance Enhancement in Sports, I appreciate the importance of mentorship in learning the real-world application of sport psychology to maximizing sports performance. Through mentorship at the NFL club where I work, I hope to be able to see firsthand the application of psychological methods to improving integrated athlete development.

In conclusion, I am excited at the opportunity to intern under the supervision of a mentor from your organization, believing that the experience will provide worthwhile lessons and experiences necessary for my career development. As I continue to gain the necessary knowledge and skills necessary for licensure, I am determined to take advantage of any available opportunities to develop in my career.
