Abstract

Leadership is not innate but an acquisition through one’s experience. On the instruction of a military administrator, I took a self-evaluation from the Values in Action (VIA) test for strengths in personality to assess the degree of leadership I had. The VIA results identified strengths in working cooperatively, enduring in challenging situations, and having excellent judgment, with room for improvement on compassion, spirituality, and affiliation. In an effort to construct my leadership, arrangements were made, including focusing on building strengths, encouraging self-leadership, and mentoring. The arrangements are geared towards the establishment of a greater sense of individual strengths and areas for development.

Self-evaluation of one’s strengths as a leader is most essential in character development. Strengths consist of talents, skills, and behavioral tendencies influencing peak performance and authenticity. My military experience, specifically in commanding a group during challenging operations such as Al Fallujah, highlighted my strengths in teamwork, strength, and sound judgment. Such experiences illustrated the significance of calling on strengths in order to survive and thrive under challenging situations.

Strategies for Development

Effective leadership is based on continuous personal growth. Some of the most effective methods for leadership development are building strength from relationships, building self-leadership, and being mentored. By seeking feedback from others who know us, we get responses regarding our strengths and weaknesses. Further, building self-knowledge, confidence, and competence helps us reach our objectives. Finally, mentorship provides invaluable advice, comment, and encouragement in building a path to leadership excellence.

Enhancing Leadership Effectiveness

Leadership training is also facilitated by embracing strength-based theories and developing subordinates. Through learning from experience and leveraging it, leaders can identify individual strengths and leverage them to enhance team cohesion and performance. Additionally, creating a supportive environment and offering mentorship facilitates the development of junior leaders. Empathy and compassion are essential in building personal relationships and motivating subordinates.

Conclusion

Self-reflection is involved in building and refining leadership skills. Through the VIA personality strengths test, I discovered more about my strengths and weaknesses. Strength-based development, self-leadership, and mentorship are some of the methods that offer avenues for continuous improvement. Embracing these practices and learning from experience, I aim to grow into a better leader.
