PSY FPX 7210 Assessment 4: George is a 76-year-old stager facing late-life challenges: medical comorbidity, hail and memory loss, social insulation, depressive symptoms, and PTSD. Short, substantiation-grounded pretensions are to assess medical and cognitive status, treat pain/depression, reduce insulation, and address trauma with age-applicable psychotherapy.
What’s Included:
George, a 76-year-old Caucasian male residing in the suburbs with his wife of 50 years, is confronting the challenges of late adulthood. He experiences physical illness, memory loss, and hearing loss, which interfere with his daily life. George, a retired gentleman with a distinguished work history, worked in the water treatment field as well as serving as a police chief. His work ethic is evident, which has been inherited by his lineage.
As a Vietnam War veteran, George has never publicly discussed his war experiences, but he has recently started to share more about them. Even though he displays signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), he does not use the assistance offered by the Veterans Administration (VA) since he feels it should prioritize working with younger veterans. George is a father to two daughters, three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren and thus holds the family in great esteem.
George’s transition to retirement has brought social and emotional challenges. As he adjusts to a home-based daily routine, depression and isolation plague him, compounded by concerns about end-of-life issues. If he is unable to care for himself, he prefers a nursing home and rejects traditional funeral rituals, choosing a celebratory alternative.
In Erikson’s Integrity vs. Despair stage, George reflects on his life accomplishments and grapples with death. Kohlberg’s moral development theory places him at stage 6, where he has moral principles that guide his actions. Baltes’ theory focuses on the gains and losses that take place during late adulthood, including illness and a decline in cognitive abilities.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) gives George a channel to dispute faulty thinking and acquire healthy coping mechanisms. Life review and reminiscence therapy provide an opportunity for reflection and a sense of closure. Social support therapy reverses loneliness, enabling meaningful relationships. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) addresses George’s PTSD symptoms.
When George experiences late adulthood, proactive intervention ensures his emotional and physical well-being. Pain is treated by psychotherapeutic interventions, reducing stress, and enhancing social function. Through this adoption of the interventions, George improves the quality of life and lives happily during his retired age.
