Career Track in Sport Psychology

The career that I see myself practicing in sport psychology is largely research and teaching under the umbrella of sport sciences and direct athlete contact for performance. But eventually, I would prefer to move on to the field of a sport psychologist, practicing clinical services in various populations. This is achieved by gaining particular credentials such as a license in psychology, fieldwork experience with applying psychological principles within sporting settings, and superior awareness within the discipline of sport psychology studies in conjunction with exercise science familiarity (AASP, 2022).

Currently, my bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and exercise science equips me with the necessary background to pursue these credentials. Although I am conscious of the shift in my interests towards the field of work in sport psychology, I accept the need for ongoing learning. In spite of the doubt, I believe that experience so far is worthwhile and look forward to embarking on the vast expanse of research still to be pursued.

Also, a career path that also suits my abilities and originates from a sport science background and an extensive love of sports, specifically the NFL and soccer, best fits career path three. The pursuit of this achievement is thrilling and terrifying but needs to be carefully planned and pursued.

Immediate career goals include certification to become a CMPC, becoming an AASP member, and still preparing to enter career path three. This includes proceeding under the tutelage of an advanced manager for the NFL, applying to APA-accredited Ph.D. programs, and advancing through coursework related to sport psychology and exercise science topic areas (APA, 2022; AASP, 2022).

Ethical Considerations

Ethical norms and codes are the focal point of my professional development plan. According to the APA Ethical Principles, I uphold integrity by not claiming to be a sport psychologist until fulfilling required certification standards. Certification standards, like obtaining 100 direct client contact hours and 40 supervised practice hours that are approved by an AASP supervisor, emphasize ethical practice (AASP, 2022).

In addition, ethical adherence to Personal Problems and Conflicts (B) and Consultations and Referrals directs decision-making for difficult cases, for example, a response to eating disorders in sportspeople. Adherence to AASP ethics, that is, Principle 3 on Human Differences, facilitates the delivery of competent services to a diverse range of clients without incompetence or prejudice (AASP, 2022).

Refinement Strategies

Looking back on my strategy, there are some things where I would like to enhance my plans for upcoming projects. Firstly, I would like to enhance learning the strengths, weaknesses, and idiosyncrasies of assignments so that I am more familiar with them. Secondly, learning about other types of assessment methods and more in general will make it even more efficient to implement interventions.

Besides, explaining my methodology of synthesizing theories and emphasizing the evolution of research will provide a stronger platform for my work. Finally, while explaining assessment methods, I aim to scrutinize variables carefully and tailor explanations to particular contexts to yield a more elaborate and detailed approach.
