PSY FPX 6020 Assessment 5: Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory explains how a child’s development is shaped by multiple environmental systems—microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem. This assessment applies the proposition to a particular reflection, exploring how family, culture, and life events impact development.
What’s Included:
Bronfenbrenner developed an ecological systems theory in order to provide a framework for child development. The intention of the theory was to account for how the natural characteristics of an individual and the environment interact to impact the development of the child. The ecological systems theory consists of five components, each of which provides an account for the different environments that impact children’s upbringing. These five ecological systems illustrate the interconnected environments that influence the development of a child. While each system influences the child differently, they all have a great role in their development (Ashiabi & O’Neal, 2015). In an effort to better understand ourselves, it is essential to examine our lives based on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory. This paper is thus a self-assessment.
The microsystem is the immediate environment in which a child resides, such as the home, school, social group, or community. Social interactions within the microsystem, such as with family members, peers, teachers, and caregivers, play a significant role in a child’s development. Positive social interactions within the microsystem establish a positive developmental trajectory, whereas negative interactions may lead to adverse outcomes. Individual interactions within the microsystem decide how individuals are treated and reacted to. My microsystem during childhood was primarily composed of my parents since I was an only child. Being the center of attention, I developed relationships with my parents and maternal grandmother. Although there were no siblings, it led to a temporary feeling of isolation, making me an introvert. Despite this, the family love and care helped me understand that there is security and love. I did well academically due to a caring family environment.
The mesosystem describes the ways in which various components of the microsystem interact and how they influence the development of a child. Being shy myself affected my interactions in the mesosystem, particularly with teachers. I did not want to seek help or clarification, and this had some impact on my academic performances. Additionally, I then developed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) at some point, which made my social life even more complicated. Despite these challenges, my parents’ active participation in my education had a positive impact on my academic performance.
The exosystem comprises parts of the environment that indirectly influence a child’s development, e.g., parents’ workplaces and extended relatives. My parents both had stable jobs, with a good life. Their influence in my childhood, together with loving relationships with my mother’s coworkers, contributed to my social development. Their commitment to my education also provided a stable base in academics.
The macrosystem consists of the broader cultural determinants, including socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and cultural norms. My upbringing was influenced by my grandmother’s Christian values of respect and consciousness of self. Being African American, I was also motivated to succeed in order to shatter stereotypes. The cultural influences, therefore, influenced my sense of self and work ethic.
The chronosystem entails major life events and historical events that influence the life of a child over time. Witnessing the events of 9/11 and my father’s mother passing away were powerful events that influenced my worldview and emotional state. The events influenced my trust level and emotional resilience.
Positive or negative development in the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem depends on the quality of the interaction between the environments. There must be positive relationships between the systems to support positive development among children. With all the struggles in my history, I give thanks to my family and community for the support and love I received.
Development is shaped by several environmental layers that interact over time, from family to culture to life events.
The microsystem—family, academy, and peers—directly impacts gestures and feelings.
Through the macrosystem, which shapes beliefs, values, and social prospects.
It represents how life transitions and literal events (e.g., trauma or global events) affect long-term development.
It helps preceptors, psychologists, and families understand how environmental layers work together to shape mortal growth.
