Ethics, happiness, and the good life are intrinsically linked concepts that have intrigued philosophers for centuries. Ethics offers a model for moral decision and right and wrong action. Happiness, defined as the individual experience of general well-being, and the good life, which involves fulfillment and purposeful life, are closely related. Ethical decision and action play a major role in happiness and the good life (Sutton, 2020).
My definition of the good life and happiness is built on moral development and the development of healthy relationships. Happiness for me is a complex phenomenon consisting of a mix of feelings connected with well-being, going beyond positive emotions to include purpose, meaning, and fulfillment. Multiple factors determine happiness, such as relationships, accomplishment, physical well-being, and general outlook of life (Sutton, 2020). For instance, reuniting with family and friends after an extended period contributes to happiness, as does attaining health-related goals.
Utilitarianism appraises actions on the basis of how well they can bring happiness and joy. An action is morally right if it brings happiness to more people and morally wrong if it does not. This moral theory revolves around measuring the moral value of actions in terms of happiness and satisfaction with human life (Häyry, 2020).
Personal core values are guiding principles that shape attitudes, behaviors, and decisions. They act as a moral compass, influencing decisions in different spheres of life. Ethics, autonomy, respect, empathy, fairness, loyalty, and security are some of the values that are responsible for individual identity and providing purpose and meaning (Steckermeier, 2020). Human well-being, respect, health, autonomy, friendship, security, and loyalty are some of the core values that have a large impact on life satisfaction and the good life (Steckermeier, 2020).
Autonomy and responsibility are central values essential for respecting others’ right to decide and for carrying out caregiving obligations. Autonomy, combined with well-being, satisfaction, and positive emotions, helps to construct moral values and promote healthy relationships. Responsibility, involving care for others, balances duties and freedom of the individual. Both values lead to satisfaction with life, happiness, and the good life (Steckermeier, 2020; Juliebdo, 2018).
Ethical responsibilities towards others significantly contribute to the definition of the good life. Respecting rights, advancing well-being, and refraining from causing harm improve life satisfaction and personal happiness. Human dignity and rights, based on ethical responsibilities, form the core of defining happiness and the good life (Łuków, 2018). Showing respect and dignity towards others promotes healthy relationships and leads to a healthy and fulfilling life (Ikuenobe, 2018).
Core values that underlie personal beliefs and conduct shape attitudes, decisions, and action. Adopting ethical values produces significant relationships, trust, respect, and sense of belonging, all of which are requisite for a good life. The components as a whole help in happiness and the good life, producing conditions under which persons live well, are enlightened, and are satisfied with their lives (Ikuenobe, 2018).
