Health, Health Care Disparities, and Social Determinants of Health

Health encompasses not only the absence of disease, but also encompasses total physical, mental, and social well-being. Health inequalities describe the variation in health outcomes that harm populations experiencing social or economic disadvantage. Social determinants of health are interconnected social and economic mechanisms responsible for health inequalities, such as social environment, physical environment, health services, and structural causes.

Health disparities are deep in areas like Hunt’s Point and Longwood, with 43% of the residents living at federal poverty levels or below. In 2015, the diabetes rate was reported to be five times more prevalent, and in neighborhoods like Heaven and Melrose, the rates were 14 times more expensive than average. Other health-related indicators are asthma admitted to the hospital, infant mortality, and new HIV diagnoses among children. Studies carried out by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute positioned Bronx County within one of the 62 counties of New York State in social and economic indicators and health services.

Community Efforts

Bronx Health Reach works tirelessly to facilitate proper nutrition and training activities through education and research. They work together with different stakeholders, including troop organizations, community members, legislators, and health professionals, to advocate for the health care system. In the same way, the Healthy Bronx Campaign tries to address socio-economic issues like grading and unemployment and enhance access to health services, which is a problem in the Bronx.
